How to Pimp Up your Brand’s Facebook Timeline

If the fastest way to captivate your fans is through visually compelling design and content messaging then Facebook Timeline is the right place and this is the right time. Perhaps on the lines of Pinterest, which has made a distinct mark on social media by using rich graphics and imagery, Facebook Timeline has also overhauled its aesthetics. Therefore, creating a visual identity for your brand online, is now more important than ever.

By March 30 Facebook will automatically change your brand’s Facebook Page to Timeline format and if you’ve already made the change, then there’s a good chance  you can improve the outlook of your page during the curation period (in which the Timeline preview is only visible to the Page Admins).

Understanding the changes listed below will better equip you in making Timeline work for your brand:

Cover Photos

These should sure excite any Design Pro as these images are massive – 815 by 315 pixels with the height customizable. Facebook does not allow brands to include price or purchase info, contact info or a call to action (i.e. Enter a Quiz, Like our Page, Tell your Friends). Cover Photos should preferably say out loud what you want to showcase – product, team, turning point for your business etc. They are public and therefore, will be the reason why people interact with your page or simply click away.

Apps

With Timeline, Brands can add upto 21 Apps while 4 of them will appear right beneath the Cover Photo with the dimensions 111 by 74 pixels. These tabs give you a great opportunity to keep your branding consistent throughout the page, while drawing in audience attention with their visually appeal and customization.

Avatar/Logos

120 by 120 pixel space overlaps your cover photo at the bottom left which essentially gives you room to put up your avatar/logo. Its placement makes it important for a well-balanced design.

Activity Log

This gives you the  opportunity to tell your brand’s story dating back from the day you first created your Facebook Profile. With photo-based, eye-catching content, fans can easily scroll through all your posts while Admins can choose to hide an activity or “Pin This” (keep the post on your timeline for longer). This is a great place to illustrate your story, especially if your brand has a long history or association with Facebook.

Highlight Posts

Page Admins can also highlight content within Timeline’s frame by stretching an image across both columns in Timeline. Posting a status as a Milestone also presents the post similarly. This obviously makes that post more visually appearing to viewers and also helps make that particular post stand out.

The football team Manchester United, for example, used this feature to highlight a big milestone in the team’s history:

Facebook Timeline gives us many opportunities to attract fans with images. But if you’re not too high on the Photoshop front, then here are a few free  photo editing tools that you can play around with:

FotoFlexer ( gives you the option of uploading photos, adding filters, adding text and re-sizing)

Aviary (upload photos and edit them online with a full suite of tools)

Gimp (open source image editing programme having massive capabilities to both designing and editing images)
